Who benefits from a Neuropsychological evaluation?

A neuropsychological evaluation can be helpful in any of the following cases:

The student has academic, social, emotional, or behavioral difficulties that have not been improved by other efforts to help, such as school programming, tutoring, therapy, or medications. The student's symptoms suggest that brain development, structure, or functioning is atypical, such as:

  • Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Autism, Asperger's, or other Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDDs)
  • Learning Disabilities (LDs)
  • Depression
  • Anxiety, including Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

The student's brain functioning has been compromised by a known event or disorder, such as:

  • Traumatic brain injury (TBI)
  • Brain tumor or cancer treatments affecting the brain
  • Seizure disorder or epilepsy
  • Stroke or brain hemorrhage
  • Loss of oxygen to the brain
  • Hydrocephalus
  • Spina bifida
  • Cerebral palsy (CP)
  • Multiple sclerosis (MS)
  • Lupus
  • Prenatal exposure to medications, alcohol, nicotine, or other neurotoxic substances
  • Lead exposure

The student has a genetic condition that affects brain functioning, such as:

  • Down's Syndrome
  • Beckwith-Wiedemann Syndrome (BWS)
  • Charcot-Marie tooth syndrome
